Former Rebs Taking Off In The NFL

Former Ole Miss wide out Mike Wallace took his game to the NFL this season and has been a hit with his new team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Wallace scored his second career NFL touchdown on Sunday against the Vikings and flipped into the endzone, much to the delight of the home fans. Anyways, Wallace has already caught the attention of his coaches, teammates and the media.

Oh yeah, if Wallace is still available in your fantasy football league, pick him up now. And then invite me, because I want to play in your league. BenJarvus Green-Ellis also might be worth a waiver pick. Check out Yahoo's love for the law firm.

Despite being conference rivals only since 1992, the Ole Miss-Arkansas series has a rich history that includes a pair of Sugar Bowl meetings. Flashback to 1966

The Rebels have faced a variety of opponents for homecoming, and like UAB, some are now members of Conference USA. One such foe is in-state adversary Southern Miss, whom the Rebels matched up against for four straight homecomings from 1966-69.

Ole Miss' six-game win streak to finish out the 2008 campaign was reminiscent of 1966, when the Rebels opened 2-2 before closing out the regular season with six in a row. That streak began with a fourth quarter rally against the Golden Eagles to provide the Ole Miss family with a happy homecoming. The following is the Clarion-Ledger's account of the events of October 15, 1966, and the photo from the Commercial Appeal is of the actual punt return.

Oxford No. 65 On "Best Sports Cities" List

With the recent success surrounding Ole Miss football, baseball and basketball, in addition to other sports, Oxford has recently been named No. 65 on The Sporting News' list of the nation's top sports cities. That ranking is up 32 spots from where Oxford was listed a year ago.

“You’ve got to understand that Oxford’s ranking is tied to how Ole Miss fares in football and basketball. It’s a pretty remarkable run the Rebels are on,” said Sporting News chief of correspondents Bob Hille, who has coordinated the rankings since their expansion 13 years ago. “But we know that, win or lose, fans support their teams in that community.”

Pittsburgh was anointed the country's top sports city in 2009 after the Steelers’ Super Bowl victory and the Penguins winning the NHL’s Stanley Cup.

This year’s Best Sports Cities list features 399 cities and towns in the U.S. and Canada, ranked by a system that assigns points to a variety of categories, including a city’s number of teams, their regular-season won-lost records, playoff berths, bowl appearances and tournament bids, championships, applicable power ratings, fan fervor, attendance and more.

Flashback To 1970

Saturday's highly anticipated meeting between the longtime SEC rivals marks the first time since 1970 that both Ole Miss and Alabama entered the game ranked in the top 20. The 1969 encounter is considered one of the greatest games in SEC history, as the Crimson Tide prevailed 33-32 despite Archie Manning's 540 total yards, which still stands today as a conference record. Manning would have his revenge a year later when the No. 7 Rebels faced the No. 17 Tide in Jackson. The following is the Jackson Daily News' account of the events of October 3, 1970.

Catch Ole Miss Soccer On TV This Weekend

This year's Rebel soccer team has been performing at a very high level and has just cracked the Top 25 rankings (No. 24, Soccer America) for the first time since 2006. Ole Miss plays at No. 16 Georgia Friday night (6:00 CT) on Fox Sports South and faces traditional soccer power Tennessee in Knoxville in a Sunday afternoon game (2:00 CT) televised by ESPNU. Friday Flashback

Check out the flashback from this week's all-time series. After seeing Vanderbilt dominate the series for the first half of the 20th century, the Rebels eventually took control and from 1953 to 1990 lost only four times to the Commodores. However, Billy Brewer's ranked Rebels faced a battle in Nashville with the upstart Dores in 1990. Ole Miss was aiming for a second straight season with at least seven wins for the first time since 1970-71 but was without starting QB Tom Like with a leg injury suffered during practice the week before. The following is the Commercial Appeal's account of the events of October 27, 1990.
