Nutt On New Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs clearly trust Coach Houston Nutt's tutelage, after drafting a pair of his former pupils in last weekend's draft. Their official team site recently interviewed Coach Nutt about Dexter McCluster and Kendrick Lewis and today put up the audio and an article. The Chiefs blogger also posted the former Rebels' new jersey numbers, and McCluster is keeping 22 while Lewis is switching from 1 to 49.

Speaking of Coach Nutt, our fearless leader will be speaking in his hometown of Little Rock tonight for the Central Arkansas Club Meeting. Visit our earlier post for a complete schedule of upcoming club meetings.

Looking Ahead To 2011

With the 2010 NFL Draft in the books, the ESPN experts are quickly looking ahead to the 2011 event, and prominent in their talks is Ole Miss icon Jerrell Powe. Draft genius Mel Kiper has Powe listed as the No. 2 senior defensive tackle in the class, and Todd McShay projects him as the No. 13 overall pick by the Denver Broncos. Preseason draft billings don't mean much, but it's nice to know that at least one Rebel is on the radar.

Jonathan Randolph Featured In Golfweek

Precedent For Snead

Our departing QB Jevan Snead caught his fair share of heat from the media for his decision to leave Oxford a year early, and while he went undrafted, he has landed in a good situation signing a free agent deal with Tampa. The list of undrafted free agents that have gone on to NFL stardom is endless, and two of the best examples played under center, as noted in today's Clarion Ledger column by Rick Cleveland.

Former Women's Tennis Player Wins World Title

Former Ole Miss women's tennis player Fran (Spencer) Chandler recently won her first ever world title. Playing for the United States Margaret Court Cup team, Chandler took the singles title and with it, her first world crown. Chandler defeated Belgium's Klaajek VanBaarle 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

The United States took the team title, defeating France (3-0) after downing Great Britain (2-1) in the semifinals. For Chandler, who served as the U.S. team captain, it was her seventh team title in the last eight years.

Chandler played for Ole Miss from 1982-84 and helped the Rebels to the SEC Finals in 1982, the AIAW Nationals and the program's first top 20 national ranking. In 1983, she earned All-SEC first team honors.

JUCO Transfers Drawing Attention

Ole Miss' February signees were praised as one of the top 15 classes in the country. However, it's a pair of December signees making noise of late, as Mississippi Gulf Coast CC products Wayne Dorsey, DE, and Damien Jackson, S, have provided an immediate impact during spring drills. Include QB Randall Mackey of East Mississippi CC, who is set to arrive this summer, and the Rebels could get some serious punch in their 2010 lineup from the JUCO ranks. Chris Low with ESPN.com blogged about it this morning.

ESPN.com: JUCO additions could be key for Rebels

Fans can get a good look at Dorsey, Jackson and the rest of the Rebels Saturday at the Cellular South Grove Bowl. Click here for all the details. Other events surrounding the weekend include the Chucky Mullins Courage Award Banquet Thursday at 7 p.m., and the Grove Stage program with Dexter McCluster the morning of the Grove Bowl at 11 a.m.

Drew Pomeranz was honored by Baseball America on Thursday when the junior left-hander was named the publication's midseason Player of the Year.

Rebels VERY Early Top-25 Pick

ESPN.com men's hoops czar Andy Katz certainly doesn't waste time and has already released his preseason top-25 for 2010-11. The early ranking has Ole Miss at No. 22, saying:

The Rebels don't lose a single key player from an NIT final four team. Ole Miss will have a star backcourt in Terrico White and Chris Warren. The only reservation I have with this group is if the Rebels can be counted on to avoid the erratic play in the SEC that has put them on the wrong side of the bubble recently.

The Rebels are the fourth SEC team in Katz's projection behind No. 14 Florida, No. 15 Kentucky (he's assuming five Cats will go pro) and No. 17 Vanderbilt.

WNBA Draft Set For Thursday

Professional Soccer Player: Danielle Johnson

Despite getting drafted with the 35th overall pick in January's Women's Professional Soccer Draft, Danielle Johnson still had to proceed through a series of roster cuts to become a member of the New Jersey Sky Blue's 22-person roster.

She made it.

As Johnson showed throughout her standout prep days in Louisiana and her stellar four-time All-SEC career at Ole Miss, she has what it takes to compete at the highest levels. She's one of 22 players for the WPS defending champions, a squad list that includes five members of the U.S. national team and several more national team members from across the globe.
