More Preseason Hype For Powe

The number of preseason college football awards lists seem to double every year, and for those of us in SID, it becomes hard to keep track. One that has been around for a couple of years now is Consensus Draft Services, which examines the player's pro potential. CDS released their preseason All-America teams this weekend and listed Jerrell Powe as an honorable mention selection. Powe, who is affectionately known as EWOP by our productions director J. Stern, has also earned All-America accolades this summer from NationalChamps.net, Phil Steele and The Kickoff.

Countdown To Kickoff: 90 Days

Toady on the countdown we would like to honor Rebel defensive tackle Norman Hand, who passed away last month. A two-year starter for Ole Miss, Hand tallied 100 tackles in the Red and Blue before a 10-year career in the NFL.

Nutt Fired Up In Destin

I spent the last week participating in my first Southeastern Conference Spring Meetings in Destin. After reading the many reports from the festivities each year, I anticipated an elaborate media area where the press set up and file their stories during the day. There is a media area. It's basically a foyer, where the reporters camp out outside the meeting rooms. They block the elevators, so the SEC coaches and administrators have to get past them before they can exit. It's not as fiendish as it might sound (the writers are usually understanding if the coaches decline comment), but it's not quite what I expected. They sit on the floor with their computers in their laps all day while waiting on meetings to get out.

Among the media contingency was our friend Chris Low with ESPN.com, who spoke with Coach Houston Nutt and posted a story about their conversation on his blog Friday. The Clarion-Ledger's Kyle Veazey was also in Destin and reported on the growth of the SEC and its effects on the state schools this morning.

Countdown To Kickoff: 91 Days

Okay, bear with me. All of the photos in the countdown so far have featured the number of days until kickoff somewhere in the photo, but honestly 91 days was pretty tough. I had to think a little out-of-the-box. So, with 91 days until the start of the 2010 season here is Cassius Ware's 91-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the Rebels' season-opening win over Auburn in 1992. It is the longest fumble return in Ole Miss history and helped spark the Rebels to a 9-3 season.

Three Is The Magic Number

The NFL Draft third round was a successful one for the Rebels in 2009, and it's on track for another good season in 2010. The 09 third round saw Mike Wallace land with Pittsburgh, and we all saw how that turned out. The ESPN.com AFC North blog projects even bigger things for Mike this year.

John Jerry was Ole Miss' third-round representative in April, and the future is looking bright. The Miami Herald and the Mississippi Press reported this week that the the rookie lineman has already begun working out with the starting unit.

Countdown To Kickoff: 92 Days

The countdown continues with, yes, another defensive lineman. Kelvin Pritchett played four seasons for the Rebels and was a first-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 1991. He was also apparently a giant, as evidence by this photo.

Countdown To Kickoff: 93 Days

Toady's photo countdown highlights former Rebel kicker (and not defensive lineman) Joshua Shene. A 2008 first team All-SEC pick and Lou Groza Award semifinalist, Shene departed Ole Miss as the No. 2 all-time scorer in school history. Plus, he also played high school football with 2008 Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 pick Sam Bradford, which is kinda cool.

We feature our first current Rebel in today's countdown, senior LaMark Armour. A Nashville, Tenn., native, Armour is part of an Ole Miss defensive line that has ranked among the nation's best the last two seasons in TFLs.

Same Ole Dex

If you are an Ole Miss fan watching Dexter McCluster do amazing things on the football field became common place. Now, fans in Kansas City are picking up Dex's abilities. I'll let the Chief's blog pick it up here:

Caution: If you’re a shoe on the foot of Dexter McCluster, you’re subject to complete destruction.

McCluster turned in perhaps the most impressive offensive play of OTAs with a long catch and run up the seam, capped off with a foot race against Eric Berry. McClsuter’s move to beat fellow Ole Miss teammate Kendrick Lewis was eye opening and his speed in the open field was powerful. But the best thing about the play didn’t come until the team came into the locker room. It was there that McCluster reveled the exploded sole of his Nike cleat. The destruction occurred on the cut he made to dart past Lewis into the open field.

Today, McCluster literally ran out of his shoes.

Most Rebel fans will say, 'hey, that's not the first time'. McCluster also ran out of his shoe on a 64-yard TD catch last year against Arkansas. Here is a photo of the catch-and-run.

Countdown To Kickoff: 95 Days

As the countdown rolls on, today's photo features former Ole Miss defensive tackle Jesse Mitchell. A first team All-SEC pick as a senior, Mitchell and his 2003 teammates helped lead the Rebels to a win over Oklahoma State in the 2004 Cotton Bowl. After his playing days were over, Mitchell attended Ole Miss law school and is now an attorney in Jackson. BTW, a No. 95 and other game-used Rebel jerseys are up for bid on our auctions site.
