Former Women's Tennis Player Wins World Title

Former Ole Miss women's tennis player Fran (Spencer) Chandler recently won her first ever world title. Playing for the United States Margaret Court Cup team, Chandler took the singles title and with it, her first world crown. Chandler defeated Belgium's Klaajek VanBaarle 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

The United States took the team title, defeating France (3-0) after downing Great Britain (2-1) in the semifinals. For Chandler, who served as the U.S. team captain, it was her seventh team title in the last eight years.

Chandler played for Ole Miss from 1982-84 and helped the Rebels to the SEC Finals in 1982, the AIAW Nationals and the program's first top 20 national ranking. In 1983, she earned All-SEC first team honors.
