FS South Swings Through Oxford

Ray Goodrich and our friends at FS South stopped in town Monday to talk with some of the Rebel coaches and players for SEC Gridiron Live and for use in the network's in-season footage. Always entertaining journalism major Kentrell Lockett is our best players when it comes to dealing with the media, and as part of yesterday's shoot, Lockett had a funny one-on-one interview with Brandon Bolden. Check out the complete blogpost at foxsportssouth.com.

Baseball America On Pomeranz

As we blogged Sunday, media are taking notice of Ole Miss ace Drew Pomeranz. With a 4-0 mark on the nation's No. 11 team, it's hard not to. Drew was under the spotlight yesterday in Baseball America's College Blog. Click and scroll to the bottom of the post.

Pomeranz Featured On Yahoo

Ole Miss goes for the series sweep of No. 2 Florida today, and once again this weekend, the tone was set Friday night by junior ace Drew Pomeranz, holding the Gators to one run and five hits with nine Ks over 7.1 innings to improve to 4-0. The southpaw All-American candidate is the reigning SEC Pitcher of the Week and has a chance to pick it up the accolade again tomorrow for the third time this year. National media are taking more and more notice of Drew, and he was featured earlier this week on Yahoo Sports.

Sanders Now Prep Head Coach

Ole Miss' 2001 Sweet 16 team continues to churn out coaches. The latest is David Sanders who was named head coach at Northwest Rankin earlier this week. Two others from that 01 squad are at Holmes Community College, where Jason Flanigan is the head coach and Jason Harrison is the assistant. In addition, after a successful stint at Taylorsville, Rahim Lockhart is now right down the road from Oxford as the head coach at Grenada High School.

Rebel Ties In Big Dance

If you're watching tonight's NCAA Sweet 16 games, you've noticed a familiar name in the Washington starting lineup. In the Huskies backcourt is sophomore Elston Turner, who is indeed the son of the Ole Miss great with the same name. The Turner family was the subject of a recent feature in the Seattle Times. On a side note, fellow Washington guard Isaiah Thomas is NOT the son of the NBA legend. His father, James, lost a friendly wager on a Lakers-Pistons playoff game in 1989.

In the other major postseason tourney, Ole Miss has rolled on to the NIT Final Four and will face Dayton Tuesday night. If you're an NYC Rebel or making the trip to the Big Apple, order your tickets now.

Ole Miss Pro Day Results In

Ole Miss Pro Day was held on Tuesday in Oxford, and by all accounts was a success for our 20-plus Rebels hoping to extend their playing career. Most notably, Dexter McCluster improved his 40-time from 4.56 at the Combine to 4.44. Our friend "The Godfather" Gil Brandt has posted all of the official times and results from the event on his nfl.com blog. Check it out.

Dori Carter Makes Successful Pro Debut

Two-time Ole Miss All-American Dori Carter is now getting paid to play golf. The Valdosta, Ga., native made her debut on the LPGA Futures Tour last weekend at the Florida Natural Classic in Winterhaven. The event was shortened to 36 holes after rain cancelled the final round. Carter tied for 16th with an even par 144.

Where does Carter go from there? She's in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico getting ready to play in the inaugural Mexico Classic at El Tigre Golf Club. The tournament starts on Friday.

Not a bad place to spend a few days.

Terrico On Fire

The NIT has been the Terrico White show thus far, as the sophomore guard has notched back-to-back 20-point games through the first two rounds. Last night, Terrico lit up his hometown Memphis Tigers for a game-high 21 points, as Ron Higgins wrote about in today's Commercial Appeal. Performances like last night come as no surprise to Rebels fans (see 2008-09), and are probably expected by those in the Bluff City who saw Terrico in action during his days at Craigmont High. Here are some old prep highlights that are floating around on youtube.

BTW, Ole Miss is one game away from a return trip to the Big Apple for its second NIT Final Four in two seasons. Tuesday's game will be at home, and you can click here for tickets.

Ole Miss In HD

When Ole Miss introduced its new high definition videoboard in Vaught Hemingway Stadium in fall 2008, it represented cutting edge technology that was ahead of the curve in college athletics. Taking that step required outfitting J. Stern and the Ole Miss Sports Productions crew with state-of-the-art equipment, which you can read about it in this week's edition of Sports Video Group.

That same HD quality will soon be available on OleMissSports.com, as RebelVision will be debuting its new high def webcast as early as next week. Stay tuned for the official launch date, and catch over 25 live baseball games on RebelVision, including all three games of this weekend's SEC road series at Kentucky.

McCluster Making Rounds

Dexter McCluster is piling up the frequent flier miles this month. The former Rebel is gearing up for April's NFL draft by holding private workouts for a number of clubs, and today, the caravan has him in Denver, according to Scout.com. McCluster has already worked out for the Cleveland Browns, who posted an article about No. 22 on their official site, and a visit with the Tennessee Titans is scheduled at the end of the month.

A large group of scouts and local media will see Dex and most of the other Rebel draft prospects in action Tuesday at Ole Miss' pro day. Catch a full recap and video highlights of the event on OleMissSports.com.

Rebel On Wall Street

Kelly Services Inc., which specializes in temporary employment, traditionally rings the opening bell of the NASDAQ every St. Patrick’s Day. I don't think they're Irish based, but they do incorporate the color kelly green in their marketing. At any rate, joining the Kelly execs in this morning's ceremony was Oxford resident and 1976 Ole Miss gradudate Ed Meisenheimer. Read about it in the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal.

Also, if you want to pick up some sweet Ole Miss St. Patty's Day gear, check out the Rebel Shop.

Rebel PG Adds More Hardware

Lightning-quick Ole Miss point guard Chris Warren continues to pile up the postseason honors, as he was named to Sporting News' All-SEC second team on Thursday.

Warren paces the Rebels and ranks third in the conference with 17.2 ppg. He leads his team into the SEC Tournament in Nashville with a chance to improve its NCAA bid chances. The Rebels, who earned a first-round bye as the West No. 2 seed, will play the winner of LSU-Tennessee tomorrow at 2:15 p.m. CT.

Here is a rundown of Warren's postseason awards so far:
- All-District IV (USBWA)
- All-SEC 2nd team (SEC Coaches)
- All-SEC 2nd team (Sporting News)
- All-SEC 3rd team (Yahoo! Sports)

SEC Hoops Awards On SECSports.com

Want to find out which of your favorite Rebels are honored as All-SEC by the league coaches? Just visit SECSports.com to watch its one-hour interactive show starting at 10 a.m. CT on Tuesday.

The show will include video and still images as well as the ability for fans to participate in polls, provide feedback and ask questions using "Cover It Live" technology. At the completion of the show, a lucky fan will win tickets to the 2010 SEC Men's Basketball Tournament, which starts Thursday at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. The link to the show is http://www.secsports.com/news/mens-hoops-all-sec-live-chat.aspx.

After the show, come back to OleMissSports.com for a full release of the Rebels' choices to the SEC awards.

Dancing Rebels?

ESPN's Joe Lunardi may not like Ole Miss' chances of making the NCAA Tournament, but plenty of other bracketologists do. CBSSports.com's Jerry Palm and The Sporting News' Ryan Fagan both have the Rebels in the Field of 64 as a No. 11 seed. Palm's bracket has Ole Miss facing BYU in the first round of the New Orleans Regional, which is never a bad trip for the Red & Blue faithful. Bracketology101.com has the Rebels as one of the last four in, along with San Diego State, Washington and South Florida. The 2010 Ole Miss squad already has a fifth SEC Western Division Championship to hang from the Tad Pad rafters, and hopefully they'll be another year added to the NCAA Tourney banner as well.

Lynn Emerges For Cards

In the Cardinals' 7-3 spring-training loss to the Mets today, former Rebel Lance Lynn tossed three perfect innings of relief, needing only 35 pitches, including 22 strikes, to sit down nine consecutive NY hitters. Lynn was 11-4 with a 2.92 ERA, 117 H and 98/51 K/BB in 126 1/3 IP for Double-A Springfield last season. He is considered one of the Cards’ best prospects, and the St. Louis Examiner recently named him a darkhorse for the staff. Link below.

Did You Know?

As the college basketball season charges into March Madness, here are some fun facts about this year's Ole Miss hoops squad...

- With a 19-9 record entering Thursday's LSU game, the Rebels need one win to reach the 20 plateau for the 10th time in school history.

- Andy Kennedy would become just the second head coach in school history with three 20-win seasons, doing so in his first four years at the helm.

- Kennedy would become the ninth coach in SEC history to win 20+ games in three of his first four seasons at a league school.

- The Rebels' win over Kansas State (currently No. 5 in RPI) in Puerto Rico is the best non-league win by an SEC team away from its home court this season.

- Chris Warren has made a 3-pointer in 38 straight games, the second-best streak in school history and ninth-best in SEC history.

- Along with an opportunity to earn its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2002, Ole Miss is in position to claim its first winning SEC record since 2002 if it wins each of its final two games.

Fans are encouraged to wear red for Thursday's game. Red t-shirts will also be given out to the first 1,500 fans, courtesy of Coca-Cola, and the Cotton Bowl trophy will be presented at halftime. Check out the game notes for more info on the game.

Oher The Endorser

Take an All-American college football player, add a stellar NFL rookie season, and throw in an award-winning film about your youth, and it won't take long for the endorsement offers to start rolling in. Michael Oher's mammoth pocket recently got a little fatter, as he signed a commercial deal with AirTran. Check out the press release below. BTW, for those of you on campus who missed The Blind Side in theaters, a free showing will be Friday night at the IPF for all Ole Miss students, faculty, staff and their families. The event includes free pizza, raffles, video games and other events.
