Sullivan 'Aces' PGA Test

It seems everywhere you turn these days former Ole Miss golfers are making headlines. The latest is 1986 SEC Champion Chip Sullivan. The former Rebel qualified for the 2010 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits with a T6th at the PGA Professional National Championship Wednesday. Sullivan, the head professional at Hanging Rock Golf Club in Salem, Va., shot 69-73-71-73--286. The highlight of Sullivan's week came on Tuesday, when he aced the 192-yard 13th hole. Read about how that ace improved his week.

Another Rebel Golfer To Lead USF

There is no shortage of Rebels in the University of South Florida's golf programs. Marci Kornegay teed it up for the Ole Miss women from 1998-2001 and is now in her fourth season as the Bulls head coach. And on Tuesday, USF handed the reigns of their men's program to another Rebel with the naming of Chris Malloy as their new head coach. Malloy was a big part of some successful Ole Miss teams during his time in Oxford, competing in the NCAA Tournament in 1999 and 2000.

Ironically, one of Malloy's teammates, Jon Bartlett, is also in the news today. The former Rebel All-American had his pro career cut short by injury, but he returned to the links over the weekend for an upset win at the West Virginia State Amateur. The win earned him a spot in the PGA Tour Greenbrier Classic, which starts July 28 on Bartlett's home Greenbrier course — the same course he just won on — in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.

Other notable Rebels from that team include Haymes Snedeker of Big Break X fame and musician Josh Kelley, who certainly outkicked his coverage. A great group of guys that have gone on to great things.

Lewis Next To Ink Deal

Another Rebel has officially signed his NFL deal, as fifth-rounder Kendrick Lewis inked his contract with the Chiefs on Tuesday. KC's official site said he will get a great look at a starting spot. Fellow Ole Miss draftee Greg Hardy has already signed, and we'll keep you in the loop as we hear about Dexter McCluster and John Jerry.

Countdown To Kickoff: 66 Days

As the countdown to kickoff rolls on, we highlight former Ole Miss linebacker Jeff Herrod. Number 66 in the program (which sounds a little odd for a LB, at least to me), Herrod led the Rebels in tackles from 1985-87 and is the program's all-time leading tackler with 528 career stops. He went on to play 11 seasons in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts and the Philadelphia Eagles.

IPF Gets New (Fake) Grass

The Indoor Practice Facility is getting a make over. Crews started pulling up the old turf on the IPF field on Monday and are replacing it with a FieldTurf surface just like the one in Vaught-Hemingway.

The design will be similar to the game field with blue end zones and a red Ole Miss script. The installation is scheduled to be completed by July 8th. Check back on the blog for future updates.

Kennedy On SEC Teleconference

The SEC held its summer teleconference for the men's basketball head coaches on Monday. Listen to our own Andy Kennedy on the SEC Digital Network.

Countdown To Kickoff: 67 Days

Today the countdown features former offensive lineman Derek King. A guard for the Rebels in the late 80's, King lettered three seasons in Oxford and helped Ole Miss to a upset win over Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 1988.

Presley Hits For Cycle

We blogged last week about former Rebel outfielder Alex Presley moving up to Triple-A, and the Monroe, La., native has already made a splash. In just his third game with the Indianapolis Indians, Presley turned in the first cycle at Indy's Victory Field, going 5-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored in a Sunday smacking of the Toledo Mud Hens 15-3. Read more on the Indians' official site. On a side note, former Ole Miss SID Matt Segal was Indianapolis' media relations manager from 2005-08.

Media Guides, Media Days Coming

I once heard former Rebel Coach David Cutcliffe say he loves getting the media guide because he knows the season is almost here. Well we haven't gotten the publication back yet, but it is off to the presses. The image below is from the photo shoot for the cover. The No. 10 was chosen for the year 2010 rather than for the player wearing it, Jesse Grandy. However, as is noted in the book's depth chart, the explosive sophomore is penciled in as the starting flanker. Foreshadowing a big year? We'll see. The final copies of the guide usually arrive the third week of July, just in time for SEC Media Days. Ole Miss' session in Birmingham is scheduled for the morning of July 23. The number of players representing each school has expanded to three this year, and the Rebels in attendance will include Kentrell Lockett, Jerrell Powe and Bradley Sowell, along with of course Coach Houston Nutt.

Countdown To Kickoff: 68 Days

Today's countdown photo highlights former Ole Miss offensive guard Jackie Simpson. A consensus All-American in 1957, Simpson was a co-captain of the '57 squad and helped the Rebels to a 39-7 win over Texas in the 1958 Sugar Bowl.

Great Reads On Scott, Stanley

We can't say enough about how proud we are of Rodney Scott for receiving the SEC Sportsmanship Award. Our friend Mike Herndon with the Press Register on the coast put the honor in perspective in his Sunday column. Another Rebel offensive standout also earned some ink today, as Nathan Stanley's hometown paper, the Muskogee Pheonix, ran a detailed feature on Tahlequah's favorite son.

Countdown To Kickoff: 69 Days

As the countdown reaches the 60's, we highlight one of the all-time great Rebels Richard Price. A three-year letterwinner for Ole Miss, Price won 29 games in the Red and Blue from 1958-60 including back-to-back national titles in 1959 and '60. After his playing days were over, Price established the Richard Price Courage and Compassion Award, which is presented each season to a senior who demonstrates dedication to Ole Miss and his teammates.

Former Ole Miss All-American jumper Brittney Reese continued her long jump dominance Saturday at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Reese turned in a distance of 23-02.75 and defeated Chaunte Lowe of Nike by seven inches. Click here for the full results.

Pistons Introduce Terrico

The Detroit Pistons introduced their draft picks Saturday morning, and Rebel-turned-Bad-Boy Terrico White will be sporting the always prestigious No. 23 in his new Red and Blue duds. In the mold of Joe Dumars, the Pistons have a history of surprising fans with the drafting of a combo guard, but as Pistons.com reports, it's worked out well in the franchise's history. Also, check out a one-on-one from earlier today with Terrico.

Countdown To Kickoff: 70 Days

Today on the countdown we would like to honor a Rebel who left us all too soon. Joey Embry was an offensive lineman on the Ole Miss football team for two years before his tragic death on May 19, 1998. His Rebel teammates dedicated the 1998 season to Joey and wore his name and number on their helmets. Joey's parents also helped keep his memory alive with the Joey Embry Memorial Scholarship Fund, established to help student-athletes at Ole Miss. Anyone wishing to contribute to the fund should contact The University of Mississippi Foundation at 1-800-340-9542.

Grantham's Grand Plan

It's been quite a week for Ole Miss golfer Sara Grantham, who wrapped up her career with the Rebels this past year by earning All-SEC honors and leading the Rebels to NCAA Regionals for the second year in a row.

The Wilsonville, Ala., native reached the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship on Friday with a 1-up win over Curtis Cup Team member and Auburn standout Cydney Clanton. Grantham ended up losing her semifinal match to Emily Hubert (incoming freshman at Arkansas) 1-up on the 19th hole. She was featured on the WAPL website. Click here to read the story.

Bulky Bolden Featured

ESPN.com has put the spotlight on college football's strength & conditioning programs this week, and blogger Chris Low is highlighting one player from the SEC Eastern and Western divisions as a workout warrior. Representing the West is our own Brandon Bolden, who is a beast in the weightroom. You might have noticed him on this year's "Rebs of Steel" poster. After serving as Dexter's sidekick a year ago, Bolden has trimmed down this offseason and is looking quicker than ever, thanks to our strength czar Don Decker, who is one of the best in the business.

We move a little more towards present day with today's photo of Rebel great Todd Wade. A 1999 first team All-SEC pick, Wade was drafted by Miami in 2000 and went on to play nine seasons the the NFL with the Dolphins, Houston Texans, Washington Redskins and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Ready Or Not

Whether or not the NBA is ready for him, Terrico White is coming, and now it's just a matter of whether or not he is drafted in the first or second round. We'll know Thursday night. He has a chance to be the first player from the state to be a first-round pick since 2004. As he showed in this 2009 University commercial produced by our buddy Micah Ginn, Terrico will fly high at the next level, just like he did in the Red and Blue.

Powe Among SEC's 10 Best

ESPN.com's Chris Low blogged over the weekend about how Ole Miss has the best front seven in the SEC, and today, he further drove that point home by tabbing Jerrell Powe No. 10 in his preseason ranking of the 25 best players in the conference, posting:
The 6-2, 320-pound Powe emerged as a dominant presence in the middle of the Rebels’ defensive line last season. He enters this next season as the top interior defensive lineman in the league ... Every great defensive line has that immovable force in the middle, and Powe is that guy for the Rebels. Still, he’s remarkably athletic for a player his size and has improved his conditioning by leaps and bounds since coming to Ole Miss.

Spurlock Emerging As WR

Jevan Snead isn't the only former Rebel QB on the Tampa Bay roster. Micheal Spurlock is entering his fourth season as a Buccaneer, and while he is best remembered by Buc fans for producing the first kickoff TD in franchise history (see below), Spurlock is making noise this summer as a wideout, as reported by the St. Petersburg Times.

Countdown To Kickoff: 73 Days

The countdown continues with the 'Big Uglies' and today's honorees former Rebel Chris Spencer. A center, Spencer helped Ole Miss win the 2004 Cotton Bowl and was a first-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks in 2005.

They should make a movie about the countdown. I know I would watch it.

Countdown To Kickoff: 75 Days

Some Rebels find success on the gridiron after college, while some find it in other fields. Today's honoree falls into the latter category. Alan Partin earned two letters as an offensive lineman for the Rebels, but is probably best known for his work in the medical field. Dr. Partin is currently the chair of the Department of Urology and Oncology Johns Hopkins Medical Institution and a world-renowned expert in the study and treatment of prostate cancer.

Carter Soaring On Futures Tour

While the men were getting ready to battle it out in the final round of the U.S. Open Sunday, former Rebel golfer Dori Carter was finishing up a solid weekend in the final round of the Tate & Lyle Players Championship, a major on the LPGA Duramed Futures Tour.

The two-time All-American at Ole Miss shot four rounds in the 60s at Hickory Point Golf Club (Decatur, Ill.) to finish at 9-under 272 and tie for sixth, her best finish since turning pro in January of this year. Carter has recorded back-to-back top-20 finishes on the Duramed Futures Tour. Life on tour for Carter continues this coming week in Hammond, Ind., at the City of Hammond Championship.

You can keep up with Carter's progress at duramedfuturestour.com or by going to her website at www.doricarter.com.

Countdown To Kickoff: 76 Days

Today we highlight former Rebel offensive tackle Marcus Johnson. A team captain for Ole Miss in 2004, Johnson earned All-SEC honors as a senior and was a second-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 2005. He currently is playing with the Hartford Colonials of the UFL.

Hardy, Geralds Sign Contracts

NFL execs have entered that busy season for inking draft picks. The first from the Rebel 2010 class is Greg Hardy, who signed with Carolina on Thursday. We'll keep you posted as we hear about the other Ole Miss draftees. The list of undrafted free agents from the 2009 Red and Blue has ballooned to eight, and LS Preston Powers may be joining that group after a mini-camp tryout with the Houston Texans this week. Meanwhile, another Rebel has inked a deal north of the border, as Daverin Geralds has signed with the CFL's Montreal Alouettes. Please note the spelling of the centre position. Congratulations to Daverin!

SEC's Best Front Seven?

Despite the rise of the Rebel D line over the past two seasons (Ole Miss has topped the SEC in TFLs both years), preseason publications such as Athlon and Lindy's have ranked the Rebel front no better than third in the SEC. ESPN.com's Chris Low posted a video breakdown of his best front seven this morning and tabbed Ole Miss at the top of his list. A big part of the praise is Jerrell Powe, who was the topic of a nice feature by Parrish Alford in this week's Daily Journal.

Countdown To Kickoff: 77 Days

The "little" brother of No. 98 on the countdown, John Jerry started 46 games for the Rebels in his four-year career and earned All-America honors last year. Jerry was a third-round pick by the Miami Dolphins in the NFL Draft this past April.

Terrico Talks With Media

A couple of recent SEC stars -- Rondo and Big Baby -- shined bright in this year's NBA Finals, and hopefully a Rebel could on that stage very soon. The draft is only a week away, and for the first time in six years, an Ole Miss name could be called, as our own Terrico White is in the first-round conversation. An update on Terrico is on OleMissSports.com, and here is an interview he did for NBA.com.

Countdown To Kickoff: 78 Days

I reached way back in the time machine for today's honoree former lineman Jim Dunaway. A two-time first team All-American, Dunaway helped the Rebels win national titles in 1960 and '62 and only lost two games in his three seasons in the Red and Blue. Dunaway played 10 seasons in the NFL with the Buffalo Bill and the Miami Dolphins and was twice named to the All-Pro team.

ESPN The Mag Showcases Rebel Baseball Again

For the second time in as many months, Ole Miss Baseball has graced the wide-format pages of ESPN The Magazine, which is impressive considering they don't print a lot of college baseball. Before was a great photo in the intro, and this time it's a six-page exposé entitled "Friday Night Lights." It centers around game one of the Arkansas series and examines the amazing atmosphere we enjoy at Swayze Field. It's a definite must read. The lead photo is below, courtesy of Pouya Dianat.

Countdown To Kickoff: 80 Days

As the countdown reaches 80 days until kickoff, we highlight one of the last two-way players in the SEC. Wesley Walls played linebacker for the Rebels from 1985-88, but was best known as a tight end, where he earned first team All-America honors in 1988. Walls was a three-time All-Pro pick and a five-time Pro Bowler during his 15 seasons in the NFL.

Seven Signees Arrive

If you've checked out the official site today, then you saw the love that Lindy's gave our recruiting efforts, ranking Ole Miss as the 19th-best recruiting school over the past three years (Rivals.com actually did the rankings but Lindy's ran it in their magazine). The publication had the Rebels' incoming "athletes" group tied for No. 5 in the nation and the defensive line class No. 6. Two big reasons for those two rankings are already on campus. See the duo at the top of the following list of signees that are enrolled in Ole Miss' first summer term.

Countdown To Kickoff: 83 Days

In the countdown some days are easier than others. Day 86? Easy. Day 92? Several options. Day 83? Well, that one was pretty tough. After sifting through the all-time rosters, I didn't come up with many options. So, I sat down and starting thinking, "What comes to mind as an Ole Miss fan when I think of the No. 83?" Then it hit me, The Immaculate Deflection.

I was only two when MSU kicker Artie Cosby's last second, 27-yard field goal attempt was blown straight back to give Ole Miss a 24-23 win in the 1983 Egg Bowl, but I always remember growing up and hearing folks say, "That day, God was an Ole Miss fan." Inspired, I set out to find a photo of the play, and search and search and search, and got nothing. Nada. Zip. I wanted to use that play, so I had to improvise. Here is video of the play, which, with a little help from above, gave Ole Miss the thrilling victory and sent the Rebels to their first bowl in 12 years.

It's not a photo, but it's still a cool image.

Rogers Makes The Cut

Former Ole Miss golfer Chris Rogers will be around for the weekend at the St. Jude Classic in Memphis as he shot 69-70--139 to make the cut. The Nashville, Tenn., native earned his way into the field through a qualifier at the beginning of the week. Rogers is tied for 32nd after two rounds in just his second ever PGA TOUR event. He also qualified for the St. Jude in 2008, but did not make the cut.

Walking In Memphis

Former Ole Miss golfer Chris Rogers is back in Memphis this week playing in the PGA TOUR's St. Jude Classic presented by Smith & Nephew. Rogers, a member of the Nationwide and eGolf Tours, shot 63 in a qualifier earlier this week to get in, and then carded a 1-under 69 in the first round Thursday at Southwind.

This marks the second time in three years for Rogers, a native of Nashville, Tenn., to qualify for the St. Jude. He also qualified in 2008, but just missed the cut.

As a senior in 2007, Rogers helped lead the Rebels to their first of four consecutive NCAA Regional appearances.

Saints Add Another Rebel

We blogged back in February about former two-sport Rebel Jermey Parnell making the New Orleans Saints active roster, and now another Ole Miss standout will wear the Black & Gold. After an All-American career in Oxford, Metcalf was a third-round pick of Chicago and played six seasons with the Bears.

MLB Draft Starts Monday

As the Rebels' 2010 baseball season comes to a close, several of the players now turn their attention to Monday's first-year player draft, which kicks off at 6 p.m. CT on MLB.com and MLB Network. As we blogged back in May, Drew Pomeranz is high on every team's list, and here is what the Associated Press said in its capsules of the top players eligible.
DREW POMERANZ LHP, Ole Miss, 6-5, 230, junior. Southeastern Conference player of year is considered by many to be top lefty available in draft and could be top-5 pick. Rebels' career leader in strikeouts is 9-2 with 2.24 ERA and 139 Ks in 100 2-3 innings. Mixes 90-94 mph fastball with a knee-buckling curve, and changeup has become increasingly effective. Was inconsistent late in season, but still considered front-line starter-type talent.
Click here for a short MLB.com video report on Pomz. We will recap all the Rebel draftees at OleMissSports.com.

The SIDs Cast Their Ballots

Three Rebels was chosen preseason All-SEC today in the 64th Annual Birmingham News SEC Football Preview. The awards and rankings come from a poll of the league's 12 sports information directors, so I was very interested to see how my votes played out. I won't divulge details, but I was hoping to see another Rebel or two on the all-conference teams. It was nice to see the underrated Jesse Grandy named runner-up for the league's Best Kick Returner. However, another rising sophomore that is not receiving his proper due this preseason is punter Tyler Campbell. The Little Rock Rebel quietly finished No. 2 in the SEC and No. 12 in the NCAA (43.95 ypp) in punting average last year and earned SEC All-Freshman accolades.

More Preseason Hype For Powe

The number of preseason college football awards lists seem to double every year, and for those of us in SID, it becomes hard to keep track. One that has been around for a couple of years now is Consensus Draft Services, which examines the player's pro potential. CDS released their preseason All-America teams this weekend and listed Jerrell Powe as an honorable mention selection. Powe, who is affectionately known as EWOP by our productions director J. Stern, has also earned All-America accolades this summer from NationalChamps.net, Phil Steele and The Kickoff.

Toady on the countdown we would like to honor Rebel defensive tackle Norman Hand, who passed away last month. A two-year starter for Ole Miss, Hand tallied 100 tackles in the Red and Blue before a 10-year career in the NFL.

Nutt Fired Up In Destin

I spent the last week participating in my first Southeastern Conference Spring Meetings in Destin. After reading the many reports from the festivities each year, I anticipated an elaborate media area where the press set up and file their stories during the day. There is a media area. It's basically a foyer, where the reporters camp out outside the meeting rooms. They block the elevators, so the SEC coaches and administrators have to get past them before they can exit. It's not as fiendish as it might sound (the writers are usually understanding if the coaches decline comment), but it's not quite what I expected. They sit on the floor with their computers in their laps all day while waiting on meetings to get out.

Among the media contingency was our friend Chris Low with ESPN.com, who spoke with Coach Houston Nutt and posted a story about their conversation on his blog Friday. The Clarion-Ledger's Kyle Veazey was also in Destin and reported on the growth of the SEC and its effects on the state schools this morning.

Countdown To Kickoff: 91 Days

Okay, bear with me. All of the photos in the countdown so far have featured the number of days until kickoff somewhere in the photo, but honestly 91 days was pretty tough. I had to think a little out-of-the-box. So, with 91 days until the start of the 2010 season here is Cassius Ware's 91-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the Rebels' season-opening win over Auburn in 1992. It is the longest fumble return in Ole Miss history and helped spark the Rebels to a 9-3 season.

Three Is The Magic Number

The NFL Draft third round was a successful one for the Rebels in 2009, and it's on track for another good season in 2010. The 09 third round saw Mike Wallace land with Pittsburgh, and we all saw how that turned out. The ESPN.com AFC North blog projects even bigger things for Mike this year.

John Jerry was Ole Miss' third-round representative in April, and the future is looking bright. The Miami Herald and the Mississippi Press reported this week that the the rookie lineman has already begun working out with the starting unit.

If you haven't already, visit our facebook page and cast your vote for which Ole Miss rookie will have the best year in 2010.

Countdown To Kickoff: 92 Days

The countdown continues with, yes, another defensive lineman. Kelvin Pritchett played four seasons for the Rebels and was a first-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 1991. He was also apparently a giant, as evidence by this photo.

Countdown To Kickoff: 93 Days

Toady's photo countdown highlights former Rebel kicker (and not defensive lineman) Joshua Shene. A 2008 first team All-SEC pick and Lou Groza Award semifinalist, Shene departed Ole Miss as the No. 2 all-time scorer in school history. Plus, he also played high school football with 2008 Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 pick Sam Bradford, which is kinda cool.

Countdown To Kickoff: 94 Days

We feature our first current Rebel in today's countdown, senior LaMark Armour. A Nashville, Tenn., native, Armour is part of an Ole Miss defensive line that has ranked among the nation's best the last two seasons in TFLs.

Same Ole Dex

If you are an Ole Miss fan watching Dexter McCluster do amazing things on the football field became common place. Now, fans in Kansas City are picking up Dex's abilities. I'll let the Chief's blog pick it up here:

Caution: If you’re a shoe on the foot of Dexter McCluster, you’re subject to complete destruction.

McCluster turned in perhaps the most impressive offensive play of OTAs with a long catch and run up the seam, capped off with a foot race against Eric Berry. McClsuter’s move to beat fellow Ole Miss teammate Kendrick Lewis was eye opening and his speed in the open field was powerful. But the best thing about the play didn’t come until the team came into the locker room. It was there that McCluster reveled the exploded sole of his Nike cleat. The destruction occurred on the cut he made to dart past Lewis into the open field.

Today, McCluster literally ran out of his shoes.

Most Rebel fans will say, 'hey, that's not the first time'. McCluster also ran out of his shoe on a 64-yard TD catch last year against Arkansas. Here is a photo of the catch-and-run.

And, here is photo evidence of the shoe.

Countdown To Kickoff: 95 Days

As the countdown rolls on, today's photo features former Ole Miss defensive tackle Jesse Mitchell. A first team All-SEC pick as a senior, Mitchell and his 2003 teammates helped lead the Rebels to a win over Oklahoma State in the 2004 Cotton Bowl. After his playing days were over, Mitchell attended Ole Miss law school and is now an attorney in Jackson. BTW, a No. 95 and other game-used Rebel jerseys are up for bid on our auctions site.
